Four Alternative Wedding Band Materials To Consider

Years ago, almost all wedding bands were made from gold and a few from sterling silver. While gold and silver still remain popular as wedding band materials, however, they are no longer the only choices. Here are a few alternative wedding band materials that each have their own merits.

Tungsten

Tungsten, more specifically tungsten carbide, is a very strong metal that has increasingly been used to make wedding bands. It's incredibly hard (almost as hard as a diamond), so it is less likely to get scratched or scuffed than a band made from gold or silver. Thus, tungsten wedding bands are a popular choice among woodworkers, industrial workers, and others who work with their hands and machinery. Tungsten has a nice sheen, and it maintains this sheen as it ages, so you do not need to take it to the jeweler for cleaning and maintenance.

Titanium

Titanium is another popular wedding band material. It is a bit more affordable than tungsten and a bit softer than tungsten but still very durable. Titanium does not corrode or change color over time, making it a good choice for those who prefer low-maintenance jewelry. It is also very comfortable, and it can be shaped into almost any shape while maintaining a soft edge, which makes it popular for use in rings that have a braided, rounded, or rope-type look.

Platinum

Platinum is a more precious metal than titanium or tungsten, so it comes with a substantially higher price tag. However, it is very durable and has an attractive appeal. Platinum can be finished to look shiny or more matte, depending on your preferences. Platinum does scratch more easily than titanium or tungsten, too. Its finish also develops a patina as it ages. Those who are set on owning a precious metal, however, will find it a more modern alternative to gold or silver.

Silicone

Another option is to choose a wedding band made of silicone. Clearly, this is by far the least expensive option on this list. Silicone rings can be made to look remarkably like metal rings. They come in any tone, from silver-like to bright blue. The nice thing about these rings is that they are flexible and easy to pull on and off. They're also very comfortable. Although they are not overly durable, most people will usually just replace them when they get worn since most cost a mere $20.
